We all know ways to keep our teeth and gums healthy and clean. Brushing, flossing, using mouthwash, and regularly visiting our dentist are the key factors in maintaining good oral health. However, what about when it comes to cosmetic tooth replacements such as porcelain veneers? Do you know how to keep them healthy? Allow us to explain a few ways you can extend the life of your veneers, and learn the science behind their ability to resist stains!
Covering Up with Porcelain Veneers
If you’re looking for a solution that will fill in gaps between your teeth, hide discoloration, or cover up any teeth that are chipped or broken, your cosmetic dentist may suggest porcelain veneers. Made up of a wafer-thin shell, the veneer fits over your natural tooth with adhesive bonding. These tooth-colored replacements are durable and can hide any impurities. You’ll see a dramatic transformation in two to three appointments! But that’s not the best part! They’re stain-resistant, too!
The Stain-Resistant Science
You’re probably thinking, “They don’t stain? Yeah, right!” It’s true! Porcelain veneers are not as porous as natural teeth. When your dentist is preparing the veneer, there is a coating placed on the veneer, which is a stain-resistant resin that keeps them brighter and healthier for a long time. However, you should know that over time, veneers can become stained if the resin begins to wear away. This can often happen due to aging.
Extending Their Longevity
There are several things you can do to extend the life of your porcelain veneers. The first is to maintain good oral health by brushing twice a day for two minutes and flossing. Other ways you can keep them healthy and strong include:
- Avoid certain foods and drinks. By treating your veneers just as you would your normal teeth, you should stay away from hard, sticky foods, acidic foods and drinks, sugary products, as well as dark-colored beverages. Coffee, tea, soda, and red wine can damage your teeth, causing stains. If you want that cup of coffee in the morning, try drinking it with a straw to prevent as much of the liquid from touching your teeth. Also, be sure to rinse your mouth afterward to wash away any residue.
- Avoid whitening toothpaste. It’s natural to want your teeth to be as bright as they can be; however, because whitening toothpaste is abrasive, it can cause the resin on your veneer to wear away more quickly.
- Stop smoking. Not only is it a bad habit, but it can cause stains to form on your teeth. Not to mention all the other negative effects it can cause on your overall health.
You made the choice to get porcelain veneers, so make sure you’re doing everything you can to make them last as long as possible. Don’t throw your money down the drain. By following these tips, you’ll extend the life of your veneers and maintain a beautiful, healthy smile.
