What are Porcelain Veneers?
Veneers are custom-crafted shells made from dental porcelain that are made to fit over the visible surface of teeth to conceal a variety of cosmetic flaws. They’re strong and durable, withstanding daily use of chewing and speaking without wearing down quickly or discoloring. Here are some of the imperfections that can be concealed with porcelain veneers in Wayne:
- Severe permanent staining
- Gaps between teeth
- Misshapen teeth
- Small teeth
- Minor misalignment
The Process of Getting Veneers
After deciding with your dentist that porcelain veneers are the best way to get the smile you want, we’ll start by preparing your teeth. This will involve our team removing a very small amount of enamel so that the veneers are able to lay flat and look more realistic. We’ll then take an impression of your teeth and send them to a lab to fabricate your veneers. Before you leave this first appointment, you’ll be fitted with a set of temporaries. About a week or so later, you’ll return to our office to have your temporaries removed and your permanent veneers bonded into place.

Porcelain Veneers FAQs
Are you still a little unsure of whether or not you want to revamp your smile with porcelain veneers in Wayne? While this treatment is great for correcting multiple smile imperfections at once, it’s understandable to be a little hesitant. After all, veneers are considered a permanent treatment. To help you make that decision, we’ve decided to answer some of the questions about porcelain veneers that we get asked the most often here at Wayne Family Dentistry.
Will Porcelain Veneers Restrict My Diet?
Because your mouth may be sore at first, we recommend sticking to a soft food diet for the first few days after getting your veneers placed. This length of time may vary based on how many veneers you’re getting. After the initial recovery period, you can eat virtually whatever you want. Unlike braces, there isn’t a laundry list of foods you can’t eat with veneers. However, in order to preserve the lifespan of your veneers, there are some foods you should avoid chewing, such as:
- Hard candies
- Hard breads
- Popcorn kernels
- Pumpkin seeds
- Hard nuts
- Caramel apples
How Much Do Porcelain Veneers Cost?
There is no set cost of getting veneers because each patient, and thus each set of veneers, is different. Your cost of treatment may vary based on several factors, such as how many veneers you need and whether your dental insurance decides to cover it. If you’re getting veneers to fix a severely chipped or crooked tooth, your insurance carrier may see it as restorative and not just cosmetic treatment, and they may elect to cover the cost. However, you shouldn’t automatically expect coverage without first consulting your individual insurance policy.
Does Getting Porcelain Veneers Hurt?
More often than not, we’ll use local anesthetic to make sure you’re numb for the veneers process. That way, you can rest easy knowing you shouldn’t feel a thing during the procedure. However, you can expect to deal with some degree of minor soreness for a few days afterwards. This discomfort can be managed by taking OTC pain medications like ibuprofen as directed on the bottle. You could also apply a cold compress to your face in ten-minute intervals for up to an hour.
Am I a Good Candidate for Porcelain Veneers?
Generally, if you’re unhappy with some aspects of the teeth you see smiling back at you in the mirror, you might be a candidate for porcelain veneers. The only thing we ask is that your mouth is infection-free before beginning treatment. If we examine your mouth and detect gum disease or tooth decay, we’ll have to address those issues prior to placing veneers.
