Not only can that be detrimental to your waistline, but your pearly whites might suffer as well. All the extra holiday treats can spell disaster for your oral health unless you follow a strict oral hygiene routine every day. How can you do that? The Importance of Good Oral Hygiene
Essentially, if you don’t take good care of your teeth, you could lose them. Cavities occur when the bacteria in your mouth feast on carbohydrates you eat and create acid that eats away at your tooth enamel. Since bacteria are always present in the mouth, limiting sugary foods and cleaning your teeth often may help reduce your risk of decay.
Tips for Better Oral Hygiene
There are several ways you can increase your oral hygiene, such as:
1. Visit Your Dentist
You should see your dentist every six months for optimal oral hygiene. At these appointments, your dentist can diagnose and treat problems like cavities before they require more extensive and costly treatment. Then, the dental hygienist will give your pearly whites a thorough cleaning, making it harder for plaque to stick to them.
2. Brush and Floss Every Day
Brush at least twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush, and floss at least once daily to clean out plaque from between your teeth that could cause cavities and gum disease.
3. Cut Back on Soda, Coffee, and Alcohol
These beverages are all acidic, meaning they can wear down your enamel and make your teeth sensitive. In addition, drinks with additives like food dye and corn syrup can stain your teeth, making them appear duller.
4. Drink Plenty of Tap Water
Tap water usually contains fluoride, a naturally occurring mineral that strengthens teeth. Drink water from the tap instead of bottled water for added oral health benefits.
5. Increase Your Calcium Intake
Eat plenty of foods that are high in calcium, like cheese and dark leafy greens. Calcium helps make your teeth stronger in the fight against decay.
6. Quit Smoking
Besides staining teeth, smoking cigarettes can cause severe side effects like gum disease, tooth loss, and even oral cancer. Put the cigarette out and reap all the health benefits that come with doing so.
