Replacing your missing teeth with dental implants is a major decision that will greatly benefit your oral health in the long run. To make sure you’re prepared, your dentist will tell you all about how the treatment works and how the various procedures involved should go. As the day of your implant placement surgery approaches, you find yourself worrying. However, you should try to remain calm. Your dentist will provide you with all of the information you need. In the meantime, it may help to read through this list of questions that many patients have after getting dental implants in Wayne.

Can I Drive Myself Home?

Most patients will be under the effects of some type of sedation or anesthesia during their implant placement surgery. If this is the case, it will take several hours for your coordination and alertness to return to normal. Because of this, you shouldn’t drive for at least the next 24 hours. You’ll need a trusted friend or family member to drive you to and from your appointment.

Will My Recovery Be Painful?

The amount of post-op discomfort you’ll experience will depend on how extensive your surgery is. If your dentist doesn’t prescribe pain medication, then over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen should be enough. The local anesthetic that was used during surgery will wear off a couple of hours after your surgery. To minimize discomfort, take the first pain reliever before the numbness subsides.

If your pain worsens instead of getting better after a few days, call your dentist in Wayne right away.

Why Do I Need to Take an Antibiotic?

Antibiotics prevent infection around the implant site. Make sure that you finish the entire dose as directed. Otherwise, an infection could develop and potentially compromise your implant.

Can I Brush My Teeth?

Keeping your mouth clean is always important, even after oral surgery. After 24 hours, you can brush as normal, but don’t get too close to the implant site. It might help to gently rinse your mouth with saltwater every few hours, but don’t spit too forcefully. Also, do not use mouthwash or hydrogen peroxide rinses for at least two weeks.

How Soon Can I Get Back to My Normal Activities?

While you can resume light activity as soon as you’re ready, avoid strenuous exercise for at least three days. It could divert blood from the implant site and interfere with the healing process.

Before your implant surgery, your dentist will give you personalized instructions for a smooth and speedy recovery. Stick to these guidelines and your implants should heal nicely, giving you a full, beautiful smile for years and years to come!
